DIY Soap Scum Remover

Soap scum. It’s the last thing I thought of when my husband and I were remodeling our bathrooms a few years back and picking out glass shower doors. Up until that point in my life, it’s only been shower curtains. A quick spray with some bleach cleaner, wipe down and rinse…and change them out every so often. Who knew that glass cannot always be cleaned with glass cleaner?!?!

After a few months, I discovered that soap scum is the enemy I face every month. Glass cleaner, regular bathroom spray and lots of elbow grease were not getting the job done. However, I have found an excellent DIY recipe to join forces and defeat the scum! 🤜🤛 Two ingredients is all it takes and it works great on the glass doors, tile and grout. Let me share my secret to working smarter, not harder:

Recipe for two ingredient soap scum remover

Let’s begin:

Equal parts:

  • Dishwashing liquid (I always use blue Dawn or generic)

  • Distilled white vinegar

You will also need:

  • Empty spray bottle

  • Glass measuring cup

  • Gloves and sponge

How to remove soap scum

Mix equal amounts of dishwashing liquid and distilled white vinegar to a glass mixing cup.

(I used 1/2 cup of each for both showers and had just enough.)

Microwave for 40 seconds, then carefully transfer to spray bottle using a funnel or measuring cup with a spout.

Give it a little shake, and it’s ready to use!

Spray glass and tile and let stand for at least 15-20 minutes.

Using a soft sponge, easily wipe down the glass, tile and grout. Thoroughly rinse off with hot or warm water.

After everything is dry, don’t forget to reseal the tile and grout.

We always use 511 Kleen & Reseal ® which is a one-step process and safe for granite, marble, natural stone, ceramic and porcelain tile and grout. Did you know that even water can stain these natural stones? Protect what you paid for and keep it looking great with a reseal every week.

Now that your glass doors, tile and grout are looking fabulous….don’t neglect your shower head! Hard water and minerals can leave a build up around the holes and leave it looking less than glamourous. So keep scrolling down to see another easy solution.

Pour two cups distilled white vinegar and one cup hot water into a quart or gallon sized baggie.

Carefully place shower head inside plastic bag and tape or band closed. This also works for stationary shower heads, but you may need extra help from someone to tape or secure while holding.

Let soak for 30 minutes, then remove and gently wipe.

You can see what a huge difference a little bit of effort made!

Just a couple of simple ingredients you may already have under your sink, and you can save money and a trip to the store with this easy DIY shower and tile cleaner. Hopefully, this helps save some of you from sore arms with your weekly cleaning routine and makes your spouse very elated to have it all so clean….and smelling great too! I know my hubby is EXTRA happy when he comes home at the end of a hard day to a clean house with freshly cleaned showers!

Enjoy!
